Putting a Plan Together: Summer Dental Emergencies

Our team at My Family Dental is here to help you enjoy a pain-free summer with our tips for creating a dental emergency plan should something happen to threaten your family’s plans this season!

Tip #1: Create A Dental Emergency Kit

Just like a first-aid kit, having a small kit specifically created for dental emergencies can help you save time and panic because you’ll have all the tools you might need in one place.

Here are some items you may want to include:

  • Dental cement

  • A dental mirror

  • Sterile gauze

  • A dry cloth

  • A small container with a lid

  • Non-aspirin pain relievers

  • Gloves

  • Compress pack

Tip #2: Know the Possible Dental Emergencies You Might Face

Although we know accidents and injuries can happen at any time, each season poses its own risks for dental emergencies. Being aware of those risks can help you be better prepared to handle them.

Here are some common dental problems you could face during the summer and initial steps you can take just before you call us at My Family Dental for an emergency appointment:

An Injury to The Mouth – Whether one of the kids who’ve been running around the picnic table, the pool, or out in the backyard falls down or bumps into another child, or whether you’re playing catch with the kids and get hit in the face with a ball, any blunt force contact to the mouth can easily result in a broken or knocked-out tooth. Get any bleeding under control, use a cold compress to reduce swelling, and if a tooth is lost, pick it up by the crown and remove any debris from it by gently rinsing it with cold water. Keep it in a sealed container of cow’s milk and bring it to the dentist office.

A Broken Tooth or Restoration – You probably barbeque during the summer months, and that means eating more meat on the bone. Biting down the wrong way, whether it’s on a rib bone or any other type of food, can break a tooth, a filling, or a crown. Follow the same steps for managing pain and swelling, and then give us a call right away!

A Toothache – Vacations and summer parties mean you’ll likely be consuming more sugar. You may also find your normal routines and surroundings are a bit off. Finally, with the hotter days, you may not be drinking enough water to stay hydrated. Put them together, and you’re at a higher risk for tooth decay and cavities. These can lead to dental pain, which you should never ignore. Whether it’s a nagging, persistent toothache or just an increase in sensitivity that comes and goes, treat it like a dental emergency and give us a call right away!
