Preventive & Oral Health

“Prevention is the best treatment.”

The team at My Family Dental takes all measures to ensure a thorough examination and detection of any potential dental problems at an early stage. Preventive dentistry emphasizes the importance of ongoing hygiene procedures and daily practices to prevent tooth decay and other dental diseases and conditions. Effective preventive dentistry combines at-home oral care by patients with chair-side treatments and counselling by our dental professionals.

WHAT DENTISTS AND DENTAL HYGIENIST CAN DO TO PREVENT DENTAL PROBLEMS

1. The dentist can diagnose problems like early or incipient tooth decay, gum diseases, and guide you in controlling the disease process.
2. Regular professional cleaning helps remove plaque, calculus, and tartar that build up on the tooth surface over time from food accumulation.
3. The dentist makes sure that existing dental treatment like restorations and crowns are in good condition.
4. Our hygienists will discuss and show you brushing and flossing techniques to make sure you clean your teeth correctly and efficiently.
5. The dentist can discuss with you the recommended diet (according to the Canada Food Guide) and the effect of sugar and acidic drinks on your teeth.
6. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition (for example Diabetes), then consult with your dentist to set a plan to ensure optimum oral health.
7. X-rays are necessary for our dentists to look for problems that can’t be seen by the naked eye, such as cavities between the teeth and problems below the gum line.
8. We use sealants especially on your back teeth to prevent them from tooth decay.

WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME?

1. Brush daily and thoroughly all of your teeth surfaces, back and front for about 2 minutes to remove plaque. Discuss with your dentist or dental hygienist the proper technique and the right toothbrush for your oral health condition.
2. Floss every night to remove food debris between teeth. There are multiple ways to clean interproximal between the teeth like floss, flosser, and an interproximal toothbrush.
3. If you are wearing braces or have a crown or bridge or an implant, then make sure you are cleaning them correctly. You may need to use a floss threader to clean all invisible areas.
4. Make healthy food choices according to Canada’s food guide.
5. Wear mouth guards, particularly custom-made ones, when playing sports. If you grind your teeth at night, be sure to wear your mouth guard to protect your teeth from wearing down and to prevent tempromandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.
6. Be sure to come see us regularly for a dental check-up. We recommend twice a year.
